Historic Garden & Estate Reviews
Heritage Rejuvenation
An established garden that has lost its way, an estate with more to manage than time allows, or a historic landscape you want to restore without losing its character? An independent view of what you have, and what matters most, is the best place to start.
I’ve spent most of my career caring for significant gardens: as Gardens Manager at Mount Stuart, leading a team of 19 across a 600-acre estate, and as Head Gardener at Kinross House, with earlier experience in London’s Royal Parks and at Giverny. I understand both the history of a garden and the practical reality of running one: the budgets, the staff time and the seasons.
What I can help with
Reviewing established gardens that have become overgrown, tired or hard to manage
Rejuvenating historic planting while respecting the original design
Setting priorities for garden and estate teams
Reviewing staffing structures, maintenance programmes and resource allocation
Managing maintenance more efficiently without losing quality
Researching the history of a garden or designed landscape
Advising hotels, wedding venues and visitor attractions on the grounds their guests see
Garden Advice & Inspection Visit: from £130
Up to one hour on site walking through your garden, discussing your concerns and priorities, with practical verbal advice and photographs where relevant. Written reports and additional work are quoted separately.
Garden & Estate Management Reviews: from £395
An independent assessment of an established garden or estate:
A structured site review of planting, condition and how the garden is managed
Priorities, risks and opportunities, set out clearly
A written report with photographs and practical recommendations
A follow-up call to talk through the findings
Prices depend on the size and complexity of the garden or estate. The starting price applies to smaller, clearly defined reviews; larger properties are quoted individually.
Hotel & Venue Grounds Reviews: from £395
For hotels, wedding venues and visitor attractions:
A review of the areas guests actually see: entrances, key views, containers, borders and event spaces
Plant health, presentation and how much maintenance the planting needs
Quick wins alongside longer-term improvements, prioritised by impact and budget
A written report and a follow-up call
The scope is agreed with you before booking, based on the areas to be reviewed.
Historic research and rejuvenation plans
For historic gardens and designed landscapes, I can investigate how a garden has developed over time, using archival material, historic maps and evidence within the landscape itself. This research can inform practical, phased plans for rejuvenation, restoration and long-term care. Where a project needs it, I work alongside heritage and conservation specialists. Larger projects are quoted individually after an initial conversation.
Aerial survey
Aerial photography can provide a useful overview of a garden or estate, helping to understand its layout, planting patterns and landscape features. It can also support comparisons with historic maps and plans. Available by quotation, subject to site conditions and flight permissions.
Travel
Local travel is included. Any additional travel costs are agreed before booking.
